PROTECTED SPEECH OR PROTECTED CHILDREN?

By

Voyle A. Glover , Esq.

In a country with over 4 million female victims of violent assaults each year and where 50% of all rapes are of women under the age of eighteen, you'd think we'd be "anti-crime." But we aren't. We pay lip service to the slogan.

Every year, little bodies are found in fields, lakes, abandoned buildings and homes and we weep and howl and rage and struggle to resist the fear that trickles deep down into our minds. But unless the grave is one we visit, in time, our anger fades and the enormity of the evil visited upon our community dims.

Our community has buried its share of precious souls, bright little lights who could not comprehend the sudden evil that came upon them in the form of a human who didn't look like Freddie Krueger. The monsters who are killing our children don't look like devils.

The nightmares aren't confined to Elm Street any more. They're in our neighborhoods stalking our children. You know. The ones who depend upon us to defend them.

I suggest that we are to blame for their harm.

Ignorant, we were, in a bliss of tolerance to the monsters that we were creating. We've paraded, marched, sloganed our backs and cars and even our children, all in support of alleged libertarians fighting for "free speech." I suggest that our unrestrained, amoral support has led us to render tortured legal definitions of that term (free speech) which has led us down a path that is killing us.

And our children.

We've watched while self-styled "free speech advocates" echoed their bold defiance in our court rooms across the country, hawking the "precious rights" of freedom of speech whilst holding perverted, warped and twisted material in their brief cases, calling it "protected speech." And as a result, our land is now flooded with movies and magazines depicting sexual perversions and enacting violent acts, often against women and children.

Incredibly, we continue to buy tickets or rent the movies to watch the perversions, the rapes, the homocides, the horrors and nightmares enacted for our special "benefit," our "pleasure," if you please.

I suggest that the "protected speech" the ACLU and others have "defended" has brought more horror to our communities than freedom. I suggest that the movie industry and its outlets have created some real Freddie Kruegers. Oh, it was not their intent. Their intent is to make money. Thus, they don't count bodies. Just money.

If you think not, then you disagree with some pretty smart business men. They demonstrate their belief in my statement every day of the year and show it by funneling billions of dollars into the stream of commerce of the world. They pay to promote their wares. They pay a lot of money for a few seconds of time, a few ticks of the clock. Advertising works.

Their dollars prove it.

If you don't think the deluge of sexual material and violence hammering the psyche of every weak mind out there is not affecting the attitudes and behaviour of such people, you simply aren't in the real world. We're feeding monsters. Indeed, we are creating them. And they're getting younger and younger. We now have children monsters murdering children.

Follow the logic. If a few seconds of an ad will affect the mind of an individual, i.e., will influence that mind and in some way predispose it to buy a product, then what do you think an hour long advertisement for murder and violence is doing to millions of impressionable minds? Some of those minds are weak, some are already sick, already on the edge. But in the name of Freedom of Speech, we continue to permit the producers of all manner of evil to bombard our society with gigantic advertisements for violence, mahem, sex and crime.

And when the ads work, we weep and wail, do the body counts and rhetorically ask "Why?"

We have a choice: Protect violence and sexual perversion or protect our children and ourselves.

The End
